Artist's Statement

Art is in my core, it has made me into who I am and affects who I am becoming.

I've been practicing art for over 15 years (since elementary school). In junior high, art teachers even allowed me to copy their original work. For high school I had the privilege to attend LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts.

After being exposed to all types of media from sculpture, pen & ink, watercolor, printmaking, etc., oil became the medium I most enjoy and work with today.

Contrary to many other artists, most of the work I create does not have a theme. Many of the works you will see here is independent of each other. The subject matter varies from still life, abstract, reference, and suggestions from friends. Colors used are purely instinctual. Some paintings use only two colors. Some paintings are mute and some are bright. The mood I'm in at that moment is reflected in some, if not all, of the colors I use.

Majority of the artwork here were started without sketching. I only use a sketch in two scenarios. One is for commissioned work so the patron can approve of the composition. Second is to work through a part of a painting I'm not comfortable with.

Recently, I've identified two subject areas that I am creating separate series' for. One is called "Four Questions". To view the progress of this project, you can visit my blog at: http://hunterart.blogspot.com (note I don't update the entries very frequently but I am working on the works!) The other series is based on dancers. I took ballet for a number of years when I was younger and through that experience, I have developed a great appreciation for that art. Painting dancers and movements from performances I have seen here in New York City is my way of paying tribute to their great skill. I plan to do at least 17 paintings of dancers/performances so stay tuned to the blog posts as I begin working on them.
